Challenging your mind is one of the eight dimensions in our exclusive My W Life wellbeing program. We encourage you to keep expanding your awareness of the world around you. We will challenge your mind with creative ideas and activities. Westminster Winter Park offers a wide range of great courses through innovative partnerships with Rollins College‘s Center for Lifelong Learning. Sharpen your pencils to learn something new – here’s just a few examples:
- “Introduction to East Asian Brush Painting”: Get an introduction to the spiritual aspects of Asian brush painting, the use of “The Four Treasures” which are the ancient materials essential for painting, and the brush strokes the Chinese Masters used known as “The Four Gentlemen” which are Bamboo, Grass Orchid, Plum Blossom, and Chrysanthemum. As the technique is learned, the artist’s own feelings about a subject will flow onto the paper, giving the painting a life of its own.
- “Prohibition in the U.S: The Dry and The Wicked”: Explore the rise and fall of prohibition in the United States, from 1920 to 1933. The Eighteenth Amendment went into effect in 1920 and allowed bootleggers and the Mafia to line their pockets and implement violence to further their own ends. Learn all about the Temperance movement, the Roaring Twenties, Speakeasies, the Mafia’s business enterprise, Al Capone’s stranglehold over Chicago, and Capone’s eventual downfall at the hands of Eliot Ness’ Untouchables and the IRS. The course will conclude with the Twenty-First Amendment and the end to Prohibition in 1933.
- “Culture, Politics and Family”: Dr. Ashley Kistler of Rollins College’s Department of Anthropology and her students will offer an inter-generational dialogue about kinship and family around the world. This course seeks to answer the questions: What is “kinship?”, What is a “family?”, and How do other societies define these institutions? Explore the roles that culture, globalization, medical innovations, political controversy, and new reproductive technologies play in defining what constitutes a family.
